COVID-19 Special update

If you are looking for guidance on how to handle self-care and supporting your children during this time, please click here for Concrete Caretaker Actions to Reassure Children and Adolescents from the Gil Institute

Here are practical measures for brain and body health during this time.

Dear Clients and Parents,

With the increased number of COVID-19 cases in Michigan, and especially in Oakland county, as well as the Governor’s decision to close all schools, I have decided that it is time to close the Defining You office until April 5th, consistent with the school closures. In order to best follow the social distancing recommendations by CDC, I think that this is best course of action at this time.

I will be offering tele-mental health services via a HIPAA compliant platform in order to continue your child’s care if you so choose. Internet access, a device with a camera and microphone (including smartphones), and an area where there is privacy is required. Most insurances cover this option the same as in-person session. I will follow up with each family individually to determine if you would like to utilize this option over the next three weeks.

If you find that your child is concerned about COVID-19, below are steps to assist with calming their fears without dismissing them.

  1. Reflect their feeling with empathy

  2. Reassure them, but also tell them honestly we don’t have all the answers yet

  3. Affirm that they are loved and safe and have lots of people to take care of them

  4. Engage in play and creative activities together.

  5. Take time to keep your own nervous system soothed through calming self-care activities

Thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate through this unique situation together as a community.

Sincerely,

Raeleen Davis, MA, LPC, NCC

Dear Clients and Parents,

You are no doubt aware of the current situation with COVID-19/Coronavirus in our country and the recent diagnosis in Oakland County. As information about the COVID-19 is reported, I want you to know that I’m closely monitoring the news about the evolving situation. At this time, there is no immediate health concern within our office and our sessions will continue to be scheduled as usual.

While the threat to each of us individually remains small, it is important for us to let you know about the steps we have recently taken to protect our clients.

  • We maintain high levels of sanitation at all times, but have recently enhanced cleaning in the waiting area and therapy rooms.

    • All the toys and sand from the sand tray are sanitized on a daily basis. Slime, thinking putty, and silly putty has been discarded and play doh will be discarded after one use. All fidgets available in the office are cleaned daily, or more frequently if necessary.

    • There is hand sanitizer available in the office, as well as a sink available for hand washing if needed. Using soap and water and washing for 20 seconds is the easiest and best way to prevent the spread of any illness.

  • I encourage clients who are exhibiting any symptoms of an acute respiratory illness symptoms (i.e. cough, shortness of breath) or have a fever within the previous 24 hours to stay home and reschedule your appointment. There will be no fee for clients who cancel due to illness. The fee for no-shows will remain in place.

  • I offer tele-mental health services via a HIPAA compliant platform in order to continue your child’s care. Internet access, a device with a camera and microphone (including smartphones), and an area where there is privacy is required. Please contact me if you would like to reschedule any in-person appointments to tele-mental health appointments.

Thank you for your support and understanding as we navigate through this unique situation together as a community.

Sincerely,
